Should the capital punishment be abolished?(今日は落ち込んでるから手抜き。)
I chose this topic because in 1997, the United Nation’s Human Rights Commission adopted a resolution to promote the abolition. Until now, more than 80 countries have abolished the death penalty. I think that
Firstly, I don’t think the death penalty works as a deterrent against crime. If so, violent crime rate would be much lower in countries that adopt the death penalty system than countries that abolish it, such as European countries. However, crime rate is much high in the
Secondly, there is a possibility of false accusation (charge). Therefore, I think that death penalty should be abolished to protect human rights, especially when the accusation has concluded to capital punishment. In 1983, an innocent death-row inmate, Mr. Menda was acquitted of charge. The reason of this mistake was that the police were given too much pressure to solve the murder case and they arrested Mr. Menda without abundant evidence.
Thirdly, there is a possibility of death penalty system becoming a dead letter by the introduction of citizen judge system. It is said that citizen judge would hesitate to sentence a defendant a capital punishment even more than professional type.
In conclusion, I think that death penalty should be abolished because death penalty is not a deterrent to crime and the possibility of false charge cannot ever be denied.
